Your cash savings can go into NS&I Premium Bonds, but a £50,000 holding can still win nothing in a monthly draw because prizes are random rather than interest paid on your balance.
Cash ISA or premium bonds: choose by certainty
A Cash ISA pays stated tax-free interest, whereas Premium Bonds offer tax-free prize chances with no promised return.
AER is the comparable cash rate
AER shows what a savings balance would earn over one year if the rate remained unchanged and interest was added to the account.
Premium bonds are not a savings rate
Premium Bonds cost £1 per bond, with a £25 minimum purchase and a £50,000 maximum holding. Each £1 enters the monthly draw run by ERNS, NS&I's electronic random-number system.
Rates and availability protocol: this page was editorially reviewed on
21 October 2026. NS&I can alter variable rates, prize rates, fixed-bond issues and new-money availability without notice. Before applying or moving savings, confirm the figure and effective date on
NS&I's official website. A rate shown in an old search result is not a live offer.
Premium bonds' prize rate is not your return
The annual prize fund rate is the value NS&I allocates to prizes across eligible holdings, not a rate promised to every holder.
The rate belongs to the whole draw
The last reliably recorded figure before this editorial review was a 3.80% annual prize fund rate, with odds of 1 in 22,000 per £1 bond each month, announced by NS&I for draws from August 2025. These are historic reference figures, not a claim about the live October 2026 rate.
A full £50,000 holding creates 50,000 entries in each monthly draw, but it does not create a minimum payment. A holder may receive no prize, modest prizes or prizes above the stated fund-wide rate.
Using a historic 3.60% annual prize fund rate as a separate illustration, a £50,000 Premium Bonds holding had a fund-wide expected annual prize value of about £1,800 if it was eligible throughout the year. That arithmetic is £50,000 multiplied by 3.60%, and it is not a promised payment or a forecast of one holder's outcome. The £50,000 Premium Bonds limit increases the number of monthly entries to 50,000, which generally makes prizes more likely than for a small holding, but the draw remains random.
A saver may receive less than £1,800, more than £1,800, or no prize in a particular month; tax-free prizes do not turn that uncertainty into a guaranteed return.

Read the table before chasing a rate
The table separates guaranteed interest from a prize fund rate and marks unverified live rates for official checking.
| NS&I product | Return and live-rate status | Access and term | Limits and tax | Status, source checked |
|---|
| Premium Bonds | Prize fund rate, not guaranteed interest. Historic reference: 3.80% from Aug 2025. | Withdrawals normally take 3 to 5 working days; no fixed term. | £25 to £50,000; prizes tax-free. | Check current availability and rate with NS&I, 21 Oct 2026. |
| Direct Saver | Variable AER, guaranteed only while the stated rate applies. | Easy-access style account, subject to current terms. | Minimum and maximum must be checked; interest may be taxable. | Do not assume it is open. Official check, 21 Oct 2026. |
| Direct Cash ISA | Variable tax-free AER. | Access depends on the issue terms. | Uses up to £20,000 ISA allowance in 2026/27. | Check issue availability, 21 Oct 2026. |
| British Savings Bonds | Fixed AER for the stated issue term. | Usually fixed for 2 or 5 years; withdrawal rules are issue-specific. | Limits and taxation depend on the issue. | Only available if a current issue is open, 21 Oct 2026. |
| Income Bonds / Investment Account | Historic variable-rate products. | Existing-holder terms may apply. | Interest may be taxable. | Not a new-customer assumption. Check NS&I, 21 Oct 2026. |

Tax can alter the winner
Cash ISA interest is tax-free, while ordinary savings interest may be covered by the Personal Savings Allowance: usually £1,000 for basic-rate taxpayers, £500 for higher-rate taxpayers and none for additional-rate taxpayers. Premium Bonds prizes are tax-free and do not use ISA allowance.
NS&I is not the first step if expensive credit-card or overdraft debt is costing more than savings can earn, if bills are due immediately, or if your goal is long-term growth and you accept investment risk. Eligibility also matters: read NS&I's current residence and identity rules before applying.
A current NS&I rate is product- and issue-specific, so the useful comparison is the figure displayed on the relevant official product page together with its effective date, rather than a rate copied from an old article or search result. For cash products, compare the quoted AER savings rate and whether it is variable or fixed; for a Direct Cash ISA, also check that the issue is open to new subscriptions or transfers.
For NS&I Premium Bonds, the comparable published figure is the Premium Bonds prize fund rate, not an AER and not a personal interest rate. A rate can therefore be current for one issue yet unavailable to a new applicant.
Choose the product by the job the money must do. Easy-access savings, such as a Direct Saver when it is open, suit cash that may be needed after the provider's normal withdrawal processing time; a Direct Cash ISA suits savers who value tax-free interest and have ISA allowance available. British Savings Bonds are more appropriate where a stated return over the selected fixed term matters more than immediate access.
NS&I Premium Bonds suit someone comfortable exchanging certainty for tax-free prize chances, while Income Bonds should only be considered by eligible existing holders who specifically need monthly income. Being over 65 does not, by itself, create access to a special NS&I rate.
Questions & answers
What are the new NS&I interest rates today?
NS&I's new rates are those shown on its official product pages on the day you apply. Confirm the AER, effective date and whether the issue accepts new money.
Is a premium bonds prize fund rate guaranteed?
No. It is not guaranteed to any individual holder, even at the £50,000 maximum. Monthly prizes can be nil, below the fund-wide rate or above it.
Are NS&I savings bonds for over 65 available?
No general current NS&I bond is available solely because a saver is over 65 unless NS&I publishes a live issue with that eligibility rule. Treat older age-linked bonds as closed unless the official page says otherwise.
How quickly can I withdraw premium bonds money?
Premium Bonds withdrawals normally take between 3 and 5 working days after a valid request. They are not suitable for a bill due tomorrow.
Is an NS&I cash ISA always the best tax choice?
No. A Cash ISA is most useful where tax-free interest or ISA shelter matters. If taxable interest stays within your Personal Savings Allowance, compare the net rate against non-ISA accounts.
The essentials:- A Cash ISA offers stated tax-free interest, while Premium Bonds offer tax-free prize chances with no promised return.
- The £50,000 Premium Bonds limit raises the number of entries, not the certainty of winning.
- Check NS&I's official page on the application day because rates, issues and access terms can change.
- Ignore viral 6.2% and 7.5% claims unless a current NS&I issue confirms them.
