NS&I payments can leave your bank within minutes, but delays can occur when the reference does not match the holding. Check the route, reference and minimum before you pay.
Choose the NS&I route before sending money
Use Pay by bank account for an eligible one-off payment. Use bank transfer as a fallback. Use a standing order only where regular deposits are accepted.
Compare routes by payment purpose
| Payment route | Best use | What you need | Do not use when |
|---|
| Pay by bank account | One-off top-up to an eligible holding | Eligible bank, account and online approval | Your bank or account is not offered |
| Bank transfer | One-off payment when Pay by bank account is unavailable | Live NS&I details and required reference | You copied details from another product |
| Standing order | Regular saving into an accepted product | Confirmed minimum, schedule and reference | The product rejects recurring payments |
A Faster Payments transfer may leave your bank quickly. NS&I may need longer to match it to the right holding.
Check the current product instructions. Contact NS&I if the payment has not appeared within the stated timescale.
If Pay by bank account is unavailable, a standard bank transfer may still work. This depends on your bank, account type or payment permissions.
Use NS&I’s current details and the exact reference.
Choose in this order: For an eligible one-off payment, use Pay by bank account. For a one-off payment without it, use a bank transfer. For monthly payments, set up a standing order only after NS&I confirms acceptance.
For one payment, Pay by bank account is usually the simplest option. You approve it through your bank and return to NS&I.
You do not need to type payee details yourself. A bank transfer is more useful when that option is unavailable.
A bank transfer needs live payee details and the exact reference. Your bank may show it as sent before NS&I matches it.
Standing orders work differently. They are repeat instructions from your bank.
Use them only if the product accepts regular savings payments. You must meet its minimum on every scheduled date.
Use the live NS&I payment reference required
Use the product- and customer-specific reference shown in your NS&I account. Use it whenever NS&I asks for a reference.
Find details in the right place
| Holding | Minimum to check | Reference rule |
|---|
| Premium Bonds | £25 purchase minimum | Follow current purchase instructions |
| Cash ISA | Product minimum and ISA allowance | Use only supplied ISA payment details |
| Direct Saver or Income Bonds | Current product minimum | Check the holding’s live instructions |
Verify receiving details, minimum investments and accepted methods before paying. Check National Savings and Investments immediately before you send money.
If you entered a wrong reference
Keep the confirmation, date, amount and sending-account details. Then contact NS&I before paying again.
This avoids creating a duplicate tracing case.
Treat payment details as specific to each product. Some details may also link to your own customer record.
Premium Bonds have a £25 purchase minimum. The right route and reference still come from current Premium Bonds instructions.
For a Cash ISA, use the payment details shown for that ISA. Check the product minimum and your remaining ISA allowance first.
Direct Saver and Income Bonds deposits need instructions for that exact holding. Do not reuse details from another NS&I account.
Do not save live NS&I bank details for later use. Do not use one payment reference for another holding.
Product terms, receiving details and matching rules can change. Check your NS&I account immediately before every payment.
Match one-off and regular payments to the holding
Use a one-off payment when the amount or date may change. Use a standing order only after confirming that recurring payments are accepted.
One-off payments suit changing plans
One-off payments suit irregular Premium Bonds top-ups. They also suit deposits after payday.
They can suit Cash ISA subscriptions too. First check the product minimum and your remaining annual allowance.
A safer NS&I payment path
1. Select the exact holding
2. Check the live method, minimum and reference
3. Pay once, or schedule only if allowed

Regular payments need a live check
A standing order sends money from your bank on a schedule. Confirm the accepted route, minimum amount, schedule and reference first.
Then check that the first payment reaches the holding.
This guidance is not enough when you open a product and need identity checks. It also does not cover ISA transfers or whether NS&I suits your goals. An ISA transfer must use the provider’s official process. Do not make an ordinary bank payment, or you could lose the tax wrapper.
You do not need a mobile banking app to pay into NS&I. Pay by bank account may not show if your bank is unsupported.
It may also fail if your bank requires you to use its app. Your account may also be unable to approve an Open Banking payment.
First check whether the product accepts an ordinary bank transfer. You may use online banking on a computer, telephone banking or a branch.
Your bank’s services decide which options you have. Confirm NS&I’s current details, the minimum amount and the reference before arranging payment.
If you cannot access online banking, contact NS&I and your bank first. Do not guess payee details or use someone else’s account.
