If you already have NS&I savings, a failed sign-in can feel like starting again. Registering twice or choosing a new application can delay access to Premium Bonds, ISAs or other holdings.
Register existing savings or apply for a new product?
Use registration when you own an eligible NS&I holding. Use a product application only when you want to place new money. An account lets you view and manage savings already in your name.
I already have NS&I savings
Start with the existing-customer route if you have a holder’s number, NS&I number, bond details or old letters. Enter your name, date of birth and address exactly as NS&I is likely to hold them. Include a previous surname if this applies.
Registering is not buying. If you already hold £25 of Premium Bonds, registration can help you view that holding. It does not add another £25 of Bonds. It does not put new money into the Premium Bonds prize draw.
I want new Premium Bonds or an ISA
Apply for the named product if you want to save new money. Premium Bonds need a minimum purchase of £25. They have a maximum holding of £50,000 per person.
A Direct ISA has its own access and transfer rules. Premium Bonds offer no guaranteed interest. ISA subscriptions count towards the annual HMRC allowance.

Useful for this task
A simple savings organiser can keep holder’s numbers, renewal dates and nominated bank details together. Do not store passwords or security codes in it.
- Keeps NS&I product names and account references easy to find.
- Creates a written record of address or bank-detail changes.
- Helps compare access dates for ISAs, Bonds and cash savings.

Prepare the details NS&I must match
Registration works when your details match NS&I’s records and you can pass identity checks. Keep your NS&I or holder’s number, full name, date of birth and current address ready. You will also need an email address and mobile number.
Use contact details that NS&I already knows, where possible. A new email address alone may not restore access. Changed bank details can trigger checks because they change where withdrawals go.
Never share passwords or one-time codes. Use the NS&I website, not links in unexpected messages.
Matching NS&I’s records gives you the best chance of quick access.
Choose the channel for the task
Your product, requested change and identity checks decide whether you use the website, telephone, post or a form. Think of each channel as a different queue. The right queue depends on what you need NS&I to do.
| Task | Usual starting channel | Check before proceeding |
| View eligible holdings | Online account | Whether the product is online-enabled |
| Withdraw money | Product-specific online route or form | Access rules and nominated bank account |
| Change name or address | Online route, phone or form | Evidence NS&I requires for the change |
| Find an old holding | NS&I Tracing Service | Past names, addresses and product clues |

New money
Apply for a named product
Do not create a new record just because an old balance is missing.
When registering as an existing NS&I customer, first check that you are registering an eligible holding. Do not start an NS&I product application by mistake. Select registration and enter your name, date of birth and current address as NS&I holds them.
Give the relevant NS&I holder’s number or NS&I number when asked. Keep Premium Bonds holder details, product references and NS&I account details close by. These details help NS&I match the right record.
You also need a working email address and mobile number for security messages. NS&I may ask questions based on its records. Check old letters if an answer does not match.
Recover access before creating another record
If you cannot sign in or cannot see an old holding, check your details first. Then use recovery and consider the NS&I Tracing Service. Tracing looks for savings that normal account access cannot find.
Check every number with care. Confirm whether you entered an NS&I number or a Premium Bonds holder’s number. Review old letters, prize notices and bank statements for product names, past addresses and reference numbers.
The most common mistake is opening a second record too soon. This can make a simple access problem harder to sort out.
Withdrawals and legal authority
Check the product rules before asking to withdraw money. Some products allow online requests. Restricted accounts, changed bank details or identity concerns may need another route or more evidence.
Contact NS&I directly if you suspect fraud. Do the same for a deceased holder’s account, power of attorney, complex identity checks or missing holdings. Product choice needs a separate decision. Cash access, tax, saving length and acceptance that Premium Bonds prizes can change all matter.
After registration, follow the confirmation screen and messages sent to your registered contact details. Do not send another request straight away. A clear match can take minutes, but checks can take between 3 and 7 working days.
If access is still unavailable, check your holder’s number, email address and date of birth. Use the official sign-in recovery route if you cannot receive a security code. This also applies if your contact details have changed.
Where recovery does not find the holding, collect old statements and prize notices. Also collect old addresses and name versions. Then use the NS&I Tracing Service.
This creates a clearer record than opening another account for the same savings.
An account normally covers the named holder’s own savings. Being a relative, carer or household member does not give you authority. It does not let you manage another adult’s NS&I savings online.
Where an adult has capacity, they should update their own bank details and contact details. They should also give their own withdrawal instructions. If a holder lacks capacity, NS&I may need legal authority and supporting documents.
Use the channel NS&I names for that authority. Online access may not be available for every representative arrangement.
Common questions
How do I register for an NS&I account?
Register through NS&I’s official online service using details that match an eligible holding. Apply separately if you want new Premium Bonds or a Direct ISA.
How long does NS&I registration take?
A clear match can take minutes. Checks may take between 3 and 7 working days when details differ. Avoid sending another request while NS&I reviews it.
Can I log in with a new email address?
Not always. NS&I may need to match new contact details to its existing record. Use recovery if you cannot access your old email or mobile.
What is the best NS&I savings account?
There is no single best option. Compare guaranteed interest, access terms, ISA rules and Premium Bonds prize chances against your goal.
Can I withdraw money from NS&I online?
You may withdraw online if your product allows it and your nominated bank account is current. Some requests need a form, telephone call or security checks.
What should I do if NS&I cannot find my savings?
Check past names, addresses, product references and holder’s numbers before using the NS&I Tracing Service. Do not assume the money is lost. Do not open a duplicate account.
